SW 39– Law as Communication

Convenor: Gregorio Robles

Contact: gregoriorobles@yahoo.es

The communication of the Theory of Law is characterised by a clear distinction between legal order and legal system, as well as by the use of the hermeneutic-analytical method. Legal language is a professional jargon specific to a particular professional group: jurists. Unlike other professional languages, which are used mainly internally, the jargon of jurists has the unique characteristic of being widely used not only by jurists themselves but also in politics, by the media, and by the general population. Always taking Communicational Theory of Law as a departure point and as a method of work, we review how downplaying the importance of language in educational system (from high school to Law faculties) is having an impact in the quality of legal texts and their intelligibility and precision.

This workshop aims to bring together academics and practitioners interested in the topic to contribute ideas and discuss them in an open forum. Those willing to contribute to the workshop shall put themselves in contact with the chair of the workshop via email.

Accepted languages: Spanish, Portuguese, English, German and Italian.

The chair of the workshop is Gregorio Robles (gregoriorobles@yahoo.es).
