This session commemorates the 380th anniversary of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, whose pioneering work laid the groundwork for formal logic and its application to law. Moving beyond historical reflections, the session focuses on contemporary developments at the intersection of logic and law, addressing critical challenges and innovations in computational law, legal reasoning, and algorithmic justice. With a spotlight on Leibniz’s intellectual legacy, the session seeks to explore how modern legal philosophy, logic and technological advancements shape the future of legal thought and practice. Contributions are invited on a broad range of topics including formal logic, legal philosophy, AI and law, computational models of legal reasoning, normative systems, and the role of logic in preserving legal values in digitally mediated societies.

Structure:

1-2 day workshop

Five to ten presentations (each 20-35 minutes) per day followed by an interactive discussion segment (at least 30 minutes) engaging both panelists and audience.

Speakers will be selected to ensure a diverse international, interdisciplinaryand gender representation balancing theoretical and applied perspectives on logic and law.

Relevance:

This session aligns with the IVR Congress 2026 aim to deepen dialogue between law, philosophy, and current societal challenges. It highlights the enduring relevance of Leibniz’s work while addressing pressing contemporary questions about how logical frameworks and computational techniques influence legal interpretation, fairness, and justice. The session promises rigorous scholarly debate on the future trajectory of legal philosophy informed by cutting-edge research in logic and technology.
