Konstantinos Papageorgiou is Emeritus Professor of the Philosophy of Law at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, School of Law. He received his Law Degree from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and his PhD (Dr. jur) from the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. His main research areas are the Philosophy of Law, the Theory of Punishment and Criminalization, Just War Theory and the Philosophy of International Justice. More recently he focuses on Freedom, Democracy and Equality as guiding principles of domestic and international politics. His publications occasionally reference themes from the History of Ideas as well as the Theory of Art. He is particularly interested in the relation of Democracy and Art. He has served on the managing boards of numerous academic and cultural institutions and is also a member of the Scientific Committee of the Hellenic Parliament Foundation since 2004. He is the President of the Hellenic Association of Philosophy of Law.

Professor Papageorgiou's doctoral dissertation (Harm and Punishment. Towards a Theory of Criminal Law Morality) was published in German by Nomos Verlag (“Schaden und Strafe. Auf dem Weg zu einer Theorie der strafrechtlichen Moralität”, Baden Baden, 1994). The same year he published in Greek a study on the evolution of the Rawlsian Theory of Justice (“The Political Possibility of Justice”, nissos: Athens 1994). During fall term 2005 he was Stanley J. Seeger Visiting Research Fellow in Princeton. Ηis book “War and Justice, A Political Philosophy for the World”, was published in Greek in 2008 by Polis. His last book “Duties to Refugees”, (Polis: Athens 2018) received the Special National Award for an “essay on a socially significant issue”. Forthcoming book form publications include “Equality for Free Citizens”, “Freedom, Legitimacy and Self-Constitution. Three texts on the Greek Revolution” and “Τhe Price of Freedom”, a selection of essays. Professor Papageorgiou is co-editor (together with Professor Gulriz Uygur) of the Encyclopedia of the Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy for the section “Liberty and Equality” (General editors Mortimer Sellers and Stefan Kirste) published by Springer.
