Brian H. Bix is the Frederick W. Thomas Professor of Law and Philosophy at the University of Minnesota, where he has taught since 2001. He earned his D.Phil. in Law from Oxford University under the supervision of Joseph Raz, his J.D. magna cum laude from Harvard Law School, and his B.A. summa cum laude from Washington University in St. Louis. Professor Bix’s scholarship spans jurisprudence, philosophy of law, contract law, and family law, with particular focus on legal interpretation, normativity, and the relationship between law and moral theory. He is the author or editor of more than twenty books, including Jurisprudence: Theory and Context (9th ed., 2023), Families by Agreement (2023), and Contract Law: Rules, Theory, and Context (2012). His works have been translated into more than ten languages and are widely regarded as standard references in legal philosophy and comparative contract law. A prolific and internationally recognized scholar, Bix has published extensively in leading journals and edited volumes. His contributions have been recognized with invitations to deliver keynote lectures worldwide, and he serves on the editorial boards of numerous law and philosophy journals. In addition to his academic work, Bix is an elected member of the American Law Institute and has served as a Reporter for the Uniform Law Commission.
