PRESENTATION:

Usually taken as an unimportant task of legal science, the classification of norms and the subsequent formulation of categories, particularly through the assessment of similarity and dissimilarity between their properties, is actually a crucial endeavour for the production of knowledge in the legal domain. Given the extension of contemporary legal systems, organizing norms in categories is an indispensable tool for the systematization of law and, composing a basic condition for the development of legal science, favours the uniformization of scientific terminology. Yet, categorization of norms is an area of legal science still full of disagreement: grounding classifications such as principles and rules, constitutive and regulative or primary and secondary are, among others, good examples of classifications that lack consensus within the epistemic community.
