This panel brings together Prof. Paolo Moro, Prof. Stefano Fuselli, Assoc. Prof. Federico Reggio (University of Padua), and Prof. Vasileios Adamidis (Nottingham Trent University) to examine the multifaceted figure of Socrates from different perspectives. Each contribution addresses both the historical significance of Socrates and the contemporary relevance of his thought.

Prof. Moro analyses Socrates’ legal defence from a methodological and logical point of view. Prof. Adamidis examines the (failed) rhetoric of Socrates through the lens of social identity theory, focusing on the social dynamics of his trial. Prof. Reggio situates Socrates’ death sentence within the context of the turbulent Athenian democracy. Prof. Fuselli, finally, offers a reading of Plato’s Crito, reflecting on the Socratic attitude toward obedience to the law and the critical issues it raises.

Overall, the panel aims to show how Socrates’ legacy remains highly relevant to contemporary discussions in legal and political philosophy, social ethics, and democratic theory.

Keywords Socrates; philosophy of process; crisis of democracy; social ethics
